Trump's pressure campaign slashes UN backing for Cuba as Germany and Italy abstain for the first time in 34 years

The UN General Assembly voted 130-17 to condemn the US embargo of Cuba — down sharply from 165-7 last year — as Trump's pressure campaign stripped away decades-old support. Germany, Italy and Latvia abstained for the first time in 34 years, while Latin American nations including Colombia and Costa Rica, which historically backed Cuba, either opposed the resolution or sat out.

The day before the vote, a heated exchange erupted on the General Assembly floor between Mike Waltz and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez, with Rodríguez calling Waltz a liar.

Trump raised the prospect of US military intervention last week, suggesting American warships could stop in Cuba on their way back from the Iran war.

Rodríguez told the assembly that 'a great power is attacking through economic war a member state of this organisation' as Cuba suffers deepening power outages and shortages.
