Rubio denied that the Trump administration facilitated Flavio Bolsonaro's escape from Brazil, even as Trump personally declared the defeated 45-year-old senator welcome to remain in the US indefinitely. It has been alleged that White House communications aide Jason Miller arranged the private jet that carried Bolsonaro to Miami.

Bolsonaro fled Brazil on Tuesday in defiance of a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports amid a money laundering investigation, travelling through Argentina and Ecuador before landing in Miami on Wednesday.

His father Jair, who similarly refused to concede his 2022 election loss to Lula, is 27 years into a prison sentence handed down for his role in a coup attempt.

In an Instagram livestream, Bolsonaro declared himself 'the elected president' and claimed 'persecution' had begun even sooner than he expected.
