President Donald Trump confirmed that Vice President JD Vance wrote to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, but insisted the contact was humanitarian, not diplomatic. Trump said Vance asked his permission to reach out, telling reporters: "They need help with medical supplies and various things — I said if you want to do that, that's OK." Iran has received the letter but not yet responded, with Tehran insisting its seven conditions must be met before any talks.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the letter was sent at Trump's direction to revive peace negotiations — a characterisation Trump flatly rejected.
The outreach comes as the US-Iran conflict enters its eighth month, with Trump threatening a fresh round of strikes after next week's midterm elections.
Iran told the UN Security Council in August that US sanctions were preventing civilians from obtaining medicines and medical equipment — the very issue Trump now says prompted Vance's contact.
