Trump taunts Greenland with an AI image turning the island into a giant US aircraft carrier after its new airport opens
Donald Trump, Mette Frederiksen and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, pictured in September, signed a deal allowing Washington to reopen Cold War-era bases at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig and expand Pituffik Space Base.Greenland's new Ilulissat airport, one of the biggest investments in the territory's history, opened to direct international flights for the first time on Thursday — hours before Trump posted the AI aircraft-carrier image online.
Trump posted the AI image on Truth Social on Saturday, depicting Greenland's coastline reimagined as a vast naval flight deck covered in US Air Force jets, hangars and a giant American flag, with the words "WELCOME TO GREENLAND" across the bottom. The post breaks a month-long silence on the issue and directly contradicts a September deal that explicitly reaffirms Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self-determination.
The September agreement, signed at the UN General Assembly, expands US military access at Pitufik and two new sites but does NOT transfer ownership of the island.
At the G20 in Atlanta, Secretary of State Marco Rubio dodged questions over whether Trump had misunderstood the deal, saying only: 'We have a very good deal.'
Trump's taunt landed the same weekend Greenland opened a new international airport in Ilulissat, part of a drive for economic independence from Denmark.
