Trump waives Russia sanctions passed by Congress just two days before they were due to take effect
Republican Senator Thom Tillis called the move 'beyond irresponsible', accusing the President of 'doing a solid for Vladimir Putin'. The order, signed late on Friday, scraps tariffs of up to 500% on Russian goods and up to 100% on buyers of Russian energy such as China and India. Trump told Congress the waiver is in 'the national interests' but gave no reason. Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it 'unfortunate'.
Trump signed the Lindsey Graham Act into law himself only last month.
Senator Richard Blumenthal accused Trump of 'sucking up to Vladimir Putin'.
The waiver comes a week after Trump struck a deal to import Russian diesel.
