Counter Terrorism Policing London is investigating after two Latvian nationals, aged 32 and 36, were arrested inside RAF Molesworth — home to NATO's Intelligence Fusion Centre and the US intelligence operations hub for Europe and Africa. Police found an abandoned vehicle near the perimeter at 10pm on Wednesday, discovered a small breach in the fence, and arrested the pair at 2am Thursday. Addresses in the Peterborough area were searched and the vehicle seized. Both men have been bailed on strict conditions while detectives work to establish why they were there.
Hours before the arrests, a NATO security conference at Molesworth discussed countering Russia's escalating sabotage campaign across Europe.
Former defence attaché to Moscow John Foreman, who spoke at the conference, said: 'What happened at Molesworth is a useful reminder that we need to strengthen base security.'
Counter Terrorism Policing chief Commander Helen Flanagan said there is nothing 'so far' to suggest a link to a separate incident at RAF Fairford last month.
