Typhoon Champi kills a man swept away by monster waves and injures 527 in Taiwan as it heads north

Gusts hit 227kmph (141mph) on Taiwan's coast, bringing down power lines and scattering roof tiles across the region. Outages affected more than 288,000 homes, though Taipower says most have had supply restored. Close to 1,300 people were evacuated from mountain areas before Champi arrived. Taipei and much of northern and central Taiwan shut offices and schools for a second day.

Once a super typhoon, Champi made a rare loop off Yilan County before moving away.

Saturday saw 259 flights cancelled, after almost 1,000 were grounded on Friday.

Forecasters warned up to 900mm of rain could fall, with the northeast hit hardest.
