Mud and debris from multiple landslides killed a woman in her 60s in Yokosuka and three more people in Chiba prefecture as Typhoon Dujuan swept through eastern Japan on Monday, with rescuers still searching collapsed homes for a missing couple in their 70s. The storm brought winds of 144km/h and record-breaking rainfall around Tokyo, leaving 45,000 households without power in Chiba alone.
The typhoon also swamped roads, triggered travel chaos across the capital region and forced early closure of one of the world's biggest video game trade fairs in Tokyo.
Authorities downgraded most warnings by Tuesday morning as the storm moved away, but search and rescue teams continued working in stricken neighbourhoods in Chiba and Kanagawa.
Some events at the Asian Games were also disrupted by the storm, which injured at least 22 people across Japan.
