UAE's Ras Al Khaimah shuts all its beaches as oil from a tanker struck by Iran spreads

The slick has leaked from the Panama-flagged Gem No 2, damaged in a record surge of Iranian vessel strikes on October 9 and 10. Neighbouring Umm Al Quwain, around 35 miles from Dubai, had already closed its white sand beaches. Images show the sea turned black and burning oil washing ashore. Residents in northern Dubai reported a powerful oil-like smell.

Satellite imagery reveals the slick now extends over 22 miles outward from the stricken tanker.

Footage shows the crew sprinting across the deck in life jackets as black smoke billowed.

The UAE's environment ministry insists the stench poses no health risk to residents.
