UAE's UN hopeful faces scrutiny over Abu Dhabi's backing for Sudan's rebel forces after entering secretary-general race
Lana Nusseibeh, 48, is the UAE's minister of state in its foreign ministry and was its UN ambassador from 2013 to 2024. Her campaign now faces pointed questions over Abu Dhabi's support for Sudan's Rapid Support Forces as the race for the next secretary-general enters its decisive phase. She insists she is 'stubbornly optimistic' about the UN's future.
She championed the Abraham Accords normalising ties between Israel and Arab states while serving as ambassador.
Her father, Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, was born in Jerusalem and advises the UAE president.
'I'm not running because I'm a woman,' she said of her bid.
