Burnham has been forced into an embarrassing U-turn after UAE officials warned that the severity of Manchester City's punishment could undermine the Gulf state's appetite for future UK investment. The Emirates has invested more than £30 billion into major UK sectors over the last five years alone, and is reportedly threatening to halt funding for a Silicon Valley-style technology hub planned between Oxford and Cambridge. Downing Street insisted after Burnham's initial sympathy that no football club is 'above the rules'.
City were found guilty of all but one of 115 charges, having artificially inflated revenues by around £900 million across a nine-year period through 'sham contracts'.
Emirati officials have warned that 'the Premier League's actions' would 'have an influence on the bilateral state relationship' between the UAE and the UK.
City face expulsion from the Premier League, a points deduction, transfer bans or heavy fines when a sanction hearing takes place — the club has announced it will appeal the verdict.
