UK faces icy winter threat as 'Godzilla' El Niño and weakening 'polar vortex' converge, Met Office warns

Britain could be heading for a brutal winter after the strongest El Niño event in 1,000 years — dubbed "Godzilla" — combines with a potentially weakening polar vortex to threaten freezing temperatures and violent storms. The Met Office calls the phenomenon "unprecedented", warning it has already smashed global records with weeks still to go before it peaks. Flood warnings are already in place across East Yorkshire, Cumbria, Suffolk, Norfolk and West Sussex as the first wave of heavy rain is expected to hit the majority of the UK on Wednesday.

The polar vortex is currently stronger than usual for late September, but forecasters warn it could weaken in January or February 2027 — releasing Arctic air southward.

Past collapses of the vortex drove events like the 2018 'Beast from the East'; temperatures in the Arctic atmosphere can spike by up to 50C in days during a disruption.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has urged all homes to stockpile cash, bottled water and tinned goods in case of emergency.
