Britain rejects Trump envoy Steve Witkoff's description of Vladimir Putin as a 'humanitarian', citing assassination attempts on UK soil
Steve Witkoff (right), the top Trump aide, with Vladimir Putin, as a Kremlin aide said a new round of three-way peace talks could be held around 10 November in Abu Dhabi.
Scotland Secretary Douglas Alexander told LBC: 'We simply do not recognise the description of Vladimir Putin as a humanitarian.' He said Putin illegally invaded Ukraine and that his government was behind attempted assassinations in Britain. US special envoy Steve Witkoff made the remark after meeting Putin in St Petersburg this week. Following that meeting, Moscow agreed in principle to resume peace talks.
Putin freed American Stephen Hubbard, 74, after four-and-a-half years, on the day Witkoff visited.
Fellow inmate Ihor Shyshko says Hubbard was reportedly beaten and shocked with a stun gun.
Shyshko called Witkoff's flattery of Putin 'shameful and despicable'.
