UK retail sales drop by 0.4%, FOUR TIMES worse than forecast, after a warm September hits winter clothing sales
Clothing and footwear sales dropped 0.9% in September, while food stores fell 0.4% — their worst performance in four months. October brought the steepest single-month drop in consumer confidence since the early days of the Covid pandemic. Economists had pencilled in a decline of only 0.1%. The figures land just days before Chancellor John Healey is set to deliver his first Budget next week.
RSM UK's Thomas Pugh warned the economy's 'run of resilience might be coming to an end'.
Fuel volumes rose 2.2% despite pump prices continuing to climb.
Shoppers laid out 0.3% more in cash but received less in goods for each pound spent.
