Britain is heading for a mid-October warm spell driven by a south-westerly airflow pulling mild air up from lower latitudes. London is expected to reach 19C on Wednesday, with temperatures across much of England likely to exceed 20C on Thursday — well above the seasonal average of 12-16C. A band of heavy rain and strong winds is forecast to sweep in from the northwest on Thursday night, ending the reprieve.

The Met Office has confirmed the mild air is not connected to Hurricane Simon, which is currently affecting parts of the United States.

Glasgow and Belfast are also set to benefit, with temperatures of around 17C expected on Wednesday despite cloudier conditions.
