Five adults and a child died when their fixed-wing Piper PA-46 hit the ground at roughly 9:31 p.m. on Tuesday in dense woodland near Mirror Lake State Park in Dellona, Sauk County. The aircraft had left Kenosha Regional Airport shortly before 9 p.m., bound for Menomonie, before going down. Investigators are examining whether an unusual weather event caused the crash; the FAA and NTSB are leading the inquiry.
In the minutes before impact, the aircraft had been in contact with an air traffic control tower in the area, and investigators are working to establish what those final exchanges contained.
Residents who had spotted a low-flying plane were already searching the woods when officers arrived, and all six people aboard were pronounced dead at the scene.
Scanner audio captured an officer reporting a plane seat with a deceased occupant in a front yard; no structures were damaged and no one on the ground was hurt.
