Ukraine strikes Sberbank's biggest data centre as drone campaign against Russia's AI infrastructure widens
A Yandex data centre of the kind struck by Ukrainian forces, three of which were hit between 5 and 11 October, knocking out email and taxi apps for millions of Russians but leaving Kremlin bot networks intact.Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who told the Warsaw Security Forum the strikes made it 'a little easier to breathe on many social media platforms' — a claim disinformation trackers say the evidence does not support.
Ukrainian drones struck Sberbank's 55,000-square-metre mega data centre in Balakovo, Saratov region, overnight on October 13-14, the fourth major data centre attack in a week after three hits on Yandex facilities. Sberbank first deputy chairman Alexander Vedyakhin confirmed the strike but insisted all systems and services were operating normally. The assault forms part of Ukraine's stated campaign to mirror Russian attacks on its own digital infrastructure.
Sberbank and Yandex are Russia's two leading AI developers, with the Balakovo site due to house Russia's most powerful supercomputer when it goes live in 2027.
Neither company has confirmed whether supercomputers were damaged, and analysts say Russia lacks the layered anti-drone defences needed to protect sites outside Moscow.
