University of Nevada, Las Vegas hands top Chinese culture job to former head of University of Kentucky's China-funded Confucius Institute

Huajing Maske, who previously served as executive director of the University of Kentucky's Confucius Institute — a programme shut down under Trump administration pressure — has been named the inaugural director of the Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Backed by $15 million from the Las Vegas Sands Corporation rather than Beijing, the Sands Institute nonetheless draws scrutiny because Maske received multiple awards at CCP-attended conferences during her time in Kentucky.
Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that '80 new propaganda cells' had been established across 30 US universities under new names in order to 'infiltrate the minds of American students.'
UNLV said no contact had been made by the Department of War with the institute — an answer that itself prompts questions about whether the new centre has yet attracted federal scrutiny.
