University of Nevada, Las Vegas has hired the former head of a Beijing-backed Confucius Institute to lead its Chinese centre

Huajing Maske, former executive director of the University of Kentucky's Confucius Institute, has been named the inaugural director of the Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, which was established with a $15 million gift from the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. Her appointment has attracted scrutiny because of her previous ties to Beijing, among them awards she accepted at conferences where senior CCP officials were present.
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth last week warned that '80 new propaganda cells' had emerged across 30 US universities using 'different names and different charters' to steal intellectual property.
UNLV maintains that the Sands Institute has taken no Chinese funding and that the US Department of War has made no contact with the centre.
The Kentucky institute Maske previously led was named Confucius Institute of the Year, an award presented to her by China's vice premier in Beijing.
