University of Nevada, Las Vegas appoints former head of CCP-funded Confucius Institute to lead its Chinese centre despite Trump crackdown

Huajing Maske, former executive director of the University of Kentucky's Confucius Institute, has been named inaugural director of the Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, appointed last autumn. Maske received a 2013 Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence Award — presented in Beijing by China's vice premier — and attended conferences with senior CCP officials during her time in Kentucky.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned last week that '80 new propaganda cells' had emerged across 30 universities under 'different names and different charters' to steal intellectual property.
UNLV insists the Sands Institute was funded by a $15 million gift from the Las Vegas Sands Corporation and has received no money from China.
UNLV confirmed it has not heard from Hegseth's Department of Defense regarding the institute.
