University of Nevada, Las Vegas has hired the former head of a China-funded Confucius Institute to run its Chinese culture centre

Huajing Maske, former executive director of the University of Kentucky's Confucius Institute, has been appointed inaugural director of the Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture at UNLV, funded by a $15 million gift from the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. Her past awards were presented by a Chinese vice premier at CCP-attended conferences, raising fresh questions about Beijing's reach into US campuses.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned last week that '80 new propaganda cells' had emerged across 30 US universities under different names to 'infiltrate the minds of American students.'
UNLV says the Sands Institute has not received Chinese funding and that no approach has been made by the Department of War.
Maske's appointment came last autumn — the same period Hegseth was publicly sounding the alarm about resurgent Chinese influence operations in higher education.
