University of Nevada, Las Vegas hands its top Chinese culture job to the former head of a China-funded Confucius Institute

Huajing Maske, who previously served as executive director of the University of Kentucky's Confucius Institute, has been named the inaugural director of the Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture at UNLV. The institute was established with a $15 million gift from the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. Awards she received in her earlier role were presented by senior CCP officials at conferences in Beijing, fuelling concern that China's influence on US campuses may have simply changed its packaging.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned last week that '80 new propaganda cells' had emerged across 30 US universities under 'different names and different charters.'
UNLV maintains that the Sands Institute has taken no Chinese government funding and that no approach has been made by the US Department of War.
In 2013, Maske accepted her Confucius Institute performance award in person from China's vice premier at a ceremony held in Beijing.
