US appeals court orders California to answer Trump DOJ's emergency bid to freeze 20,000 suspected noncitizen ballots
Every California county has been handed a 48-hour ultimatum to identify suspected noncitizens on its voter rolls and set their ballots aside. Officials who refuse 'risk significant federal scrutiny', Justice Department letters warn. The DOJ went to the Ninth Circuit after US District Judge David Carter did not rule by its deadline. California must reply by noon Saturday, with the November 3 midterms days away.
Attorney General Todd Blanche's filing to the appeals court declared: 'This is an emergency.'
Bill Essayli: 'Every minute that goes by, American citizen votes are being diluted.'
Judge Carter's own hearing on the lawsuit is still scheduled for Tuesday.
