US appeals court rejects Trump Justice Department bid to stop California counting 20,000 ballots it alleges were cast by noncitizens

The Trump administration had ordered California counties to set aside the mail-in ballots and verify them, claiming they belong to noncitizen voters. The federal appeals court threw out that demand on Monday and declined to intervene in the lawsuit.

The judges refused to rule on whether California election officials can count the disputed ballots.

The ruling blocks the Justice Department's attempt to quickly force the ballots aside.
