US Catholic bishops say the White House 'exploited' their Oval Office prayer with Trump less than two weeks before the midterms

Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grob says the Heritage Foundation-organised meeting was meant to be private, with the White House refusing to confirm whether bishops' consent was sought.
Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grob says the Heritage Foundation-organised meeting was meant to be private, with the White House refusing to confirm whether bishops' consent was sought.

Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grob issued 'A Public Apology', saying the clip was filmed 'unbeknownst' to the bishops and released without their consent. Des Moines Bishop William Joensen wrote that he wished he had been 'more shrewd and less simple'. Asked about consent, the White House press office declined to answer. Spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said instead there has 'never been a greater president for Catholic Americans'.

Grob said the bishops were 'directed to stand' behind Trump after a 90-minute policy talk.

Trump aide Margo Martin posted the video, which ran for under 30 seconds.

Grob: 'We should never have been put in that position by the White House.'
