US Coast Guard halts search for 11 missing after a boat capsized off Mexico and survivors were attacked by sharks
The boat capsized on Friday with 27 people aboard, in waters the US Coast Guard says are often used by smugglers. Sixteen were pulled from the sea in a 90-minute rescue, three of them suffering wounds consistent with shark bites. Two survivors were in a critical condition after being taken to hospitals in San Diego. All those rescued are Mexican nationals, and Customs and Border Protection officers are now interviewing them.
Coast Guard Lt. Santiago Tamburini said victims clung 'to each other, to debris' to stay afloat.
The Mexican Navy had joined the search for the 11 people still missing.
