US congresswoman Ilhan Omar's ex-husband, alleged to be her brother, described himself as a 'gay man' in an academic paper
Ilhan Omar, who is facing a Trump administration probe into her conduct, appeared alongside streamer Hasan Piker at a sold-out Minneapolis event eight days before the midterm elections.
Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the British citizen Ilhan Omar married in 2009 and who many in Minneapolis's Somali community alleged was her brother, identified himself as "a gay man of the East African diaspora" in an August 2026 academic paper on queer violence in Kenya, adding fresh weight to claims the union was a marriage of convenience to secure him a green card.
Obama's FBI and DHS investigated the marriage in 2016, found "some evidence" it was fraudulent, but shelved the probe after prosecutors determined that any offence was time-barred under the five-year statute of limitations.
A friend of Omar's first husband, Ahmed Hirsi, reportedly described Elmi as Omar's "brother from London" and said Omar had married him legally "to get him papers."
Close to 40 House Democrats declined to add their names to a letter spearheaded by Rep. Pramila Jayapal calling on the Trump administration to halt the probe — former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Majority Leader Steny Hoyer among those who also passed.
