US defence secretary Pete Hegseth's aides dropped and broke Eisenhower's WWII globe after refusing to wait for Pentagon historians
The 30-inch relic crashed onto its base on 3 February, tearing an inches-wide gash near Antarctica and knocking the sphere off its rotating mount. Curators from the US Army Center of Military History were furloughed, so his staff sent their own crew. A source blamed an 'apparent lack of patience'. The partial government shutdown that sidelined the experts ended that very same day.
Pentagon response: 'Accidents happen, we are grateful no one was harmed.'
An official called the report 'another inconsequential non-story'.
The globe never reached Hegseth's office, and photographs show its fragments scattered on the hallway carpet.
