US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's staff broke Eisenhower's World War II globe after refusing to wait for furloughed historians
The 30-inch relic crashed onto its base on 3 February, tearing a gash several inches wide near Antarctica and knocking the sphere off its rotating mount. Expert curators were furloughed in a shutdown over President Trump's immigration crackdown, and that shutdown ended the same day. One source blamed an 'apparent lack of patience'. The Pentagon shrugged: 'Accidents happen.'
Army spokesman Christopher Surridge confirmed the damage happened during 'an attempted move'.
Retired brigadier general Ty Seidule said bluntly: 'Hegseth is no Ike.'
A Pentagon official dismissed it as 'another inconsequential non-story'. The globe never reached Hegseth's office.
