Democrat Haley Stevens endorses Republican Mike Rogers for the Michigan Senate days before US midterms as her staff resign
Sen. Dan Sullivan (left) and fellow Senate candidate Dan Sullivan, whose presence on Alaska's ballot prompted the Trump administration to file a lawsuit it claimed risked voter confusion — a case a federal judge dismissed as "infeasible" after ballots were already cast.
Representative Haley Stevens cited a bitter rift over Israel as the reason she crossed party lines, appearing at a Detroit church service with Rogers before posting a video from her car saying "I don't belong in Abdul's campaign." Her chief of staff Justin German and many of her own office staff resigned immediately on Sunday morning, calling the move "shocking and heartbreaking." Trump called the defection "very brave" and "BIG," and said he would "love to have" Stevens join the Republican Party.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who is Jewish, condemned Stevens' move as "a DESPICABLE BETRAYAL."
Stevens has grown so disillusioned with El-Sayed over Israel that she is reportedly considering converting to Judaism.
Trump called El-Sayed a "jihadist lunatic" at an Iowa rally and said Congress would need "a special metal detector for Abdul" if he won.
