American drivers have now gone 158 straight days paying more than $4 a gallon at the pump, as the Iran war throttles tanker movement through the Strait of Hormuz — the chokepoint that handles a fifth of global oil supply. Inflation reached a three-year peak of 4.2 per cent in May before retreating to 3.7 per cent in September. Between March and May, consumers spent an estimated $59 billion more on fuel than during the same months a year earlier.

Two cargo ships were struck by projectiles and sank near the Strait of Hormuz within 24 hours of each other, with Iran pledging to intensify its attacks.

A Politico poll found that 29 per cent of undecided voters would still withhold support from Republicans even if Trump cut gas prices by $1 before the midterms.
