US gas prices stay above $4 for record 158 days straight as Iran war drives inflation to 3.7%

American drivers have now endured pump prices above $4 a gallon for 158 days in a row — an unprecedented run — as Trump's Iran war restricts oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and pushed September inflation back up to 3.7 per cent. The ripple effect extends from fuel stations to grocery aisles, with toy prices also rising ahead of the Christmas shopping season. Patrick DeHaan of fuel-price tracker GasBuddy estimates that consumers paid roughly $59 billion more for fuel between March and May than over the same period a year earlier.
Trump has claimed gas prices are lower than they were under Biden, yet drivers have remained above $4 far longer during his presidency.
Energy companies are reaping the rewards — TotalEnergies expects refining margins to nearly quadruple year-on-year, with Shell and BP also flagging record or near-record profits.
