A 12-year-old girl was hit on Lauchlan Way, close to the Ayrshire College campus, while out during her lunch break from Kilwinning Academy. Crash investigators kept the road closed for nearly ten hours before the bus was removed. Paramedics deployed two ambulances, two special operations response teams and a critical care team, but were unable to save her.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact officers on 101, quoting reference 1484 of Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

A parent said her son 'heard screams' nearby and that everyone present 'was left traumatised — it's just terrible.'

Councillor Joe Cullinane called it a 'tragic incident' as North Ayrshire Council confirmed it is working with Police Scotland.
