Iran's reclusive Supreme Leader Khamenei breaks six-month silence to tell Gulf rulers to 'know your real enemy'

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not appeared in public since suffering wounds in the US-Israeli airstrikes that killed his father six months ago, has made his most forthright public statement to date, calling on Muslim-majority nations to stand together against America and Israel. The written message, posted to Khamenei's Telegram channel to coincide with Islamic Unity Week, challenged Gulf rulers by asking whether "rogues without identity from thousands of kilometres away" would dare to covet their lands if Muslims were united. It comes after a Friday statement in which he prohibited any conduct damaging to social cohesion within Iran and cautioned officials against "discouraging statements" that undermine national morale.

Khamenei's father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, died in the opening US-Israeli strikes on 28 February that began the Iran war.

During the conflict, Tehran has directed strikes against US military facilities and Gulf state infrastructure, widening the gulf between Iran and the Arab neighbours it is now calling to unite.
