Kyle Quin Schrock, 36, of San Diego, fell while hiking in Madeira after the trail gave way under him on October 11. 'I thought it was my death,' he told followers from his hospital bed, wearing an oxygen mask. He has broken his back, ribs and sternum and is in intensive care awaiting spinal surgery. Doctors also need to drain his lungs.
Dangling over the drop, he heard a voice say a helicopter was coming: 'the best news'.
Schrock quit accountancy to travel and now has 1.3 million Instagram followers.
Sister-in-law Tara Schrock's fundraiser had raised $11,700 of its $30,000 goal by Friday.
