Bodycam footage shows Rhode Island police shooting dead a suspected sailboat thief who fired at them aboard a stolen yacht

Brendan Norris, 27, stole the custom-built Hinckley yawl Pathfinder from Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City on August 22 before sailing it to Newport, Rhode Island, where officers tracked him down four days later. Body camera footage released on October 30 by Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy captures the 19-second gun battle that left Norris dead from a severe gunshot wound to the head.
The wounded officer, struck in the leg by Norris and in the face by shrapnel, climbed into the cabin and found Norris dying — telling colleagues over his radio: 'Everybody chill.'
Two officers dived off the stolen vessel onto the harbormaster's boat mid-shootout to escape the gunfire.
The shooting remains under investigation; the injured officer has since returned to work.
