US salmonella outbreak linked to raw Virginia oysters sickens 27 people across 12 states as five are hospitalised
The oysters were harvested by the Little Wicomico Oyster Company from the Little Wicomico River, which flows into Chesapeake Bay. They were shipped to restaurants and retailers in 15 states and Washington DC. Pennsylvania has the most cases with eight, followed by New York with four. The CDC warns the true toll could be higher, and the FDA says the oysters may have spread further.
Oysters harvested between September 18 and October 8 have been recalled.
A salmonella-positive result came back on an oyster sample taken from Pennsylvania.
Virginia shut the harvest just eight days into oyster season, with the ban running until November 7.
