US senator Chris Murphy is 'awake and alert' in hospital after suffering a stroke at his son's hockey game
Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy, 53, collapsed at his son's hockey game on Saturday afternoon after experiencing numbness in his arm. A local hospital identified the stroke before he was transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore; his chief of staff Allison Herwitt confirmed on Sunday that he is under observation and responding well to treatment.
Murphy had been campaigning across North Carolina, Michigan, Minnesota and Florida and was due in New Hampshire on Sunday to stump for Senate hopeful Chris Pappas.
The senator, seen as a possible 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, is the third Senate Democrat in recent years to suffer a stroke, after Chris Van Hollen and John Fetterman in 2022.
Fetterman, who relies on live-captioning technology after his own near-fatal stroke, said his family is 'rooting for Chris and his family for a full and speedy recovery.'
