US Supreme Court refuses to let immigration judges shelve deportation cases, handing Trump a win in his border crackdown

The US Supreme Court refused Tuesday to restore immigration judges' power to temporarily shelve deportation cases, leaving intact a deal between the Trump administration and Texas that banned the long-standing practice. The court issued a one-sentence order with no explanation, and no justice publicly dissented, denying an emergency request from Baltimore and two other cities plus an immigrant legal advocacy group.

The shelved practice, known as 'administrative closure', had been used in hundreds of thousands of cases to pause deportations where separate proceedings — such as visa petitions or criminal appeals — were pending.
