US vice president JD Vance faces backlash after answering a Republican student's housing question with a joke about a senator's backside

Kate White, the Turning Point USA chapter president at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, pressed Vance on why her generation is told by Republicans to marry young and start families when the median American home now exceeds $415,000. Vance opened his response by counting how many times Fox News host Jesse Watters, who was moderating the event, had mentioned Ohio Senator Jon Husted's backside — drawing laughter from Watters but fury from viewers.
Sarah Matthews, who held the role of White House deputy press secretary during Trump's first term, wrote: 'I genuinely cannot believe this is a real exchange between a voter and the Vice President.'
The joke ties into a running gag Trump has been promoting over the past month, which began when he praised Husted's physique at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio.
Vance did eventually concede Republicans 'don't pay enough attention to the affordability problems affecting young people', attributing soaring costs to undocumented immigration and the practice of Wall Street investors purchasing homes.
