President Donald Trump also backed Vivek Ramaswamy, saying Amy Acton's mother 'went very rogue on the daughter'. The ad features Donna Arthur branding Acton 'a liar', even though Arthur's husband faced charges of raping Acton when she was 12. Ramaswamy has committed $4 million to running the spot, notwithstanding the backlash. Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace described it as 'the most shameful, disgusting, offensive ad' of the season.

Ohio Republican senator Jon Husted said bluntly: 'I would not have run that ad.'

Ramaswamy's Polymarket odds of winning the governor's race slumped to 22 percent.

Mace warned that defending the ad 'might have cost JD Vance the presidency'.
