US warns California election officials they risk prosecution for counting suspected non-citizen ballots after 28 'green card' holders are charged

Sacramento green card holder Kamlesh Shah, 67, allegedly registered and voted on the same day in November 2024, and insists 'nobody told me' he was ineligible. He is among 28 people charged under 'Operation Protect the Vote'. President Donald Trump has threatened California officials with jail over the disputed ballots. The Justice Department says it has charged 113 people in 20 states in seven weeks.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter says all 28 appear on a 20,000-name list.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta says the 28 cases amount to '.0001%' of voters.

The 20,000 names reached California on a USB drive with a handwritten password.
