Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night' shows a REAL dawn sky from July 1889, not his imagination, astronomers say

A South Korean team led by Elijah Jeong-hyun Kim has matched the painting to the predawn sky over Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on about 22 July 1889. Art historians have long dated the work to June, a month earlier. The study, in Scientific Reports, identifies the star cluster as the Hyades in Taurus rather than Aries, as earlier work assumed. 'I will bet on this date,' Kim said.

Van Gogh admitted himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum after a series of mental health crises.

Kim believes Van Gogh conceived the work in June and finished it after 22 July.

The crescent moon, Venus and the Hyades would all have been visible from his asylum window.
