Victim Umansky was killed by a Russian drone while writing homework on protecting the defenceless from the powerful

From the Newshound archive · first published 8 October 2026.

Daniel Umansky was finishing a homework essay about not allowing the powerful to oppress the defenceless when a Russian drone struck his apartment, killing him in front of his mother. His death came as Russia launched missile strikes that killed 18 Ukrainians, including four children aged one and eight. Putin simultaneously signalled eagerness for peace talks at the Valdai Discussion Club, demanding Ukraine surrender Donbas and accept neutral status.

Putin claimed Russian forces would seize the remaining 11 per cent of Donetsk 'much sooner' than Ukrainian estimates, even as he called for talks 'as soon as possible.'

Ukrainian drones destroyed at least three Russian supply trucks on the R-280 corridor to Crimea, while a marine drone struck an oil tanker near Sochi resort.
