Waitrose opens its first full-size supermarket in eight years in north London while M&S races ahead on food sales

M&S grocery sales jumped 14.9pc in the four weeks to October 4, far outpacing Waitrose's 2.3pc. The John Lewis-owned grocer's response is an 18,000sq ft store inside Cricklewood's former Galtymore Ballroom, an Irish dance hall dating from the 1950s. A second supermarket opens in Hale Barns, Greater Manchester, in November. Waitrose has also dropped its 2024 target of 100 convenience stores in five years.

Four more sites follow from 2027: Oakham, Bedminster, Chalk Farm and Springstead Village.

Underlying operating profit still slid £7m to £103m in the six months to August.

John Lewis faces 'really tough trading', according to chairman Jason Tarry.
