Waitrose opens its first new supermarket in eight years in north London, with four more stores planned for 2027

Waitrose has launched a new store in Cricklewood, north London — its first supermarket opening in eight years — as part of a £1bn investment plan, with Hale Barns in Greater Manchester due to follow next month. In 2026, the company will add a supermarket in Oakham, Rutland, along with convenience stores in Bedminster, Chalk Farm and Springstead Village. Tom Denyard, the former Tesco executive who has led the chain since January, has earmarked 29 stores for refurbishment. Marks & Spencer has, by some measures, overtaken Waitrose on grocery market share.

Sales climbed 4% over six months, though underlying operating profit slipped £7m to £103m.

Earlier IT failures caused gaps on shelves that weighed on Waitrose sales.

Retail director Tina Mitchell praised the chain's 'unmatched quality and industry-leading welfare standards'.
