Owen Filer, from Cwmbran, insists there is 'no secret' beyond working all his life and never overeating. Born in Pontnewydd in 1919, he served with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and the Military Police in Bombay during the Second World War. SSAFA honoured him on Friday at Tredegar Veterans Support Hub. He turns 107 on Monday.

SSAFA helped him home from India to his dying father, but he arrived too late.

Asked about turning 107: 'I thought it would be a better world I would be living in.'

He told a separate gathering his real secret was 'homemade Welsh cakes'.
