Wales's only trans clinic halts ALL surgery referrals after rate found to be FOUR TIMES higher than England's

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has suspended every surgery referral made through the Welsh Gender Service — covering both new and existing cases — after data revealed the clinic was directing patients toward gender-affirming procedures at close to four times England's rate: 13 per 100,000 compared with three in England. The pause was triggered by 2025-26 figures showing that the service, which draws from under five per cent of the UK population, accounted for 17 per cent of all gender surgery referrals across the country. An independent clinical review, commissioned by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee, will examine concerns about referral and assessment processes. Patients with scheduled psychological support appointments have been advised to keep them while the review proceeds.

Freedom of information data showed Wales's gender surgery referral rate running at 13 per 100,000 — nearly four times England's figure of three per 100,000.

The Welsh Gender Service had already been formally designated a 'potential service of concern' in the week before Friday's decision to suspend all referrals.

Investigative journalist Nick Wallis warned that detransitioners 'living with the scars' will bring NHS legal claims — 'only then will the true horrors of this industry be exposed.'
