Walter Koenig, who played Chekov in the original Star Trek series, dies aged 90 as George Takei leads tributes
Walter Koenig, pictured in his Star Trek Starfleet uniform, died of natural causes at his North Hollywood home on Sunday aged 90, having appeared in 36 of the original series' 50 episodes.
Walter Koenig died of old age on Sunday at his North Hollywood home, with his daughter and niece by his side. Takei, who played Sulu, recalled that Koenig stood as best man at his 2008 wedding to Brad. 'Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man,' Takei wrote. The two men first met on the bridge of the Enterprise and maintained their friendship for close to six decades.
Chekov's Monkees-style mop-top was designed to lure younger viewers to the show.
Koenig later played ruthless Psi Corps telepath Alfred Bester in Babylon 5.
He denied the studio's claim that Chekov answered Soviet newspaper Pravda's criticism.
