Walter Koenig died of natural causes at his North Hollywood home on Sunday, his representative announced. He joined Gene Roddenberry's show at the start of its second season and appeared in 36 of its 50 episodes. He reprised Chekov in the original-cast films from 1979 to 1991. Sci-fi fans also knew him as the scoundrel Alfred Bester in Babylon 5.
Chicago-born Koenig was the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants from Lithuania.
He admitted he had never watched Star Trek before joining: 'This has got to be phony.'
